Catalyst is an application that directly connects with Canvas, enabling it to provide an enhanced experience and implement additional features, such as scheduling, course classification, and an improved notification system. Catalyst can take actions on your behalf, including file submissions and sending Canvas messages.

General Overview

Catalyst has been one of my more proud projects, with lots of inter-locking parts, such as email notifications, PWA applications, self-hosting instances, database integration, external API access, organizational structures, permissions, user-authentication, S3 bucket, and so much more. This project has also been awarded the Congressional App Challenge for 2025 as it was such an influential application.

Inspiration & First Iteration

The initial insipration for this application, originated in my head in 8th grade (Fall of 2021), at this point, I had quite a bit of programming experience, but nothing on this scale. It was end of 10th grade, when I wanted to start building the first idea / iteration of this project. The first commit was on March 10, 2024 (public archive). This project was written with Next.JS, React, and the T3 stack, a big influence at the time. This project was eventually just became a scaffolding project before becoming abandoned. Despite this only became a scaffolding project that got abandoned, it did help me learn what was possible, and things that could be built for future iterations. The last commit to this repository was not even a month later, on April 06, 2024.

The Second Stride

The second iteration of Catalyst, was created no less than exactly 4 months later (on August 06, 2024) (public archive). This iteration eventually became one of the longest strides of the application. Throught this I learned about deployments through hosted services like Vercel. The project was eventually abandonded January 12, 2025.

The Final Iteration

The final iteration took place on April 01, 2025 continuing all the way through March 06, 2026. This iteration was the version uploaded to the Congresisonal Application Challenge. This is the final version (for now) of Catalyst. Unfortunately, the project is currently abandoed, as K-State doesn't allow external connections to Canvas via the conventional way Catalyst connects. As there is no way to test any of the existing or new features of Catalyst, no more progress can be made.
